I recently participated in introductory classes offered by WISH Canada. I was informed after having attended 5 classes not to practice anymore because my brother is schizophrenic. I noticed on your website in the dos and don'ts section that you should not practice if you have a history of schizophrenia but there is no mention that you shouldn't practice if you have a family member that suffers from schizophrenia. I'm a healthy 34 year old woman who's interested in Medical Qigong as a way of being proactive with my health but I got scared when I was told that I shouldn't practice. I did purchase the cd and was wondering if I could continue with the practice?

Tracy nothing like that would exclude you from any form of self improvement or meditation, these additional limiting ideas are a hinderance to basic intent and action principles. Read Qi-gong's basic history at acupuncture.com, if you cant find it here easily.

Hi Tracy,

Russ is correct. If you do not have schizophrenia yourself there should be no problem with you practicing qigong. Just because your brother has it does not mean that you are affected. My advice would be to disregard the suggestion to stop after five visits (i don't know where that came from) and continue to practice if you feel it is benefiting you.

Regards,
Ken

Hello to all, there is a very interesting article written by Kevin Chen on that site, the title is Chinese Qigong and the Qigong-induced mental disorders. It is very informative. At point 2.2 he mentions a specific form of Qigong which is helpful for schizophrenic people, but done under close supervision. The article is in the research section on this website.
