- Introduction to Qigong and Its Medical Applications
(by Kevin Chen, Ph.D. MPH )
This lecture will introduce one of oldest traditional Chinese forms of exercise and healing -- Qigong meditation -- with some basics in the concept, history, forms and its development in Chinese medicine, as well as its relationship with acupuncture and other meditation like yoga. It will differentiate the internal qigong meditation from external qi-energy healing, and explore its medical applications. As one of the few scientists who have both knowledge of qigong and are actively involved in qigong research in the US, Dr. Chen will also introduce some of scientific studies he was personally involved in --- applying qigong therapy in treatment of addiction, arthritis and cancer.
- Yin-Yang Perspective of World and Diseases, and How to Practice Taiji Five Element Qigong
(by Kevin Chen, Ph.D. MPH, or Andy Rosenfarb, L.Ac )
This lecture will introduce the basic Daoism view of world and the Yin-Yang perspective of diseases. It classified all diseases into two categories and 4 types, and different diseases may need different methods for effective treatment. Taiji Five-Element Qigong was created by Mr. Binhui He, a renowned medical qigong master from China, in response to the fact that modern medicine has failed to provide cure for many chronic diseases, and that many drugs used to treat these diseases have long-term side effects. The instructor will explain step-by step of the three major forms of Qigong five-element qigong, including magnification, classic meditation and purification, when to practice, and how to practice well. It is the basics that every qigong practitioner can benefit immediately.
- Inhibitory Effect of External Qi Therapy on Cancer Growth: A Review and Its Implications in Cancer Treatment
(by Kevin Chen, Ph.D. MPH)
To increase our understanding of the role that bioenergy plays in cancer treatment, and to explore the potential healing effect of qigong therapy, this lecture reviews some major in-vitro and in-vivo studies of external qi and bio-energy therapy for cancer preformed in the past 20 years. The typical in-vitro study involved randomly dividing the laboratory-prepared cancer cells or other cultures into different groups with one group being treated with bio-energy therapy, plus one or two control groups. Sometimes, one group was treated by sham healer as a control. The typical in vivo study involved the injection of tumors or cancerous cells into mice, and then randomly dividing the animals into various groups with one group treated by bioenergy therapy. The control group could be either non-treatment or sham treatment (placebo). Most of the studies have demonstrated the inhibitory effect of bioenergy on the growth of various cancer cells in comparison with the control or sham-treated groups. Most in vivo studies reported that the bio-energy treated group often had significantly reduced tumor growth and/or longer survival lives among the cancer-infected animals. There is a lot of evidence suggesting that external qi therapy or human bio-energy has an inhibitory effect on cancer growth. However, human bio-energy therapy for cancer treatment is an area that is often neglected by mainstream medicine and research, and it should be seriously examined and considered as an important supplement to conventional cancer treatment.
- Scientific Evidence and Applicable Methods of Mind Healing
(by Kevin Chen, Ph.D. MPH)
This lecture examines evidence from in-vitro and in-vivo lab experiments suggesting that human intent and mental state may influence a variety of biological subjects. These influences include: a) acceleration and inhibition of growth rates of micro-organisms, plants, and cells; b) changes in the functional activity, conformation, and other characteristics of biomolecules and cells, and c) mutagenesis or mutation in cells and bacteria. This evidence suggests that intent and mental influence may play an important role in health and healing by setting in motion physiological processes that are either healthful or pathological. Although the mental influence may originate either within the subject or from an external source, mental influence originating from within the subject is probably more common and might be as potent as that originating from external sources. These studies raise profound questions about the role of intent and mental state in perhaps all illnesses, including those presumed to be primarily genetic in origin.
Dr. Chen will also teach some practical methods of mind healing that can be used in everyday life, including positive thinking, strengthen mind power through meditation, critical timing of applying mind power, and communicating with the sickness location.
